What the Board Does — And How It Affects Your Funeral

The WV Board of Funeral Service Examiners regulates funeral homes and funeral directors in West Virginia. Here's what that means for you as a consumer.

They license funeral directors and establishments. Every funeral home operating in WV must be licensed by the board. If you want to verify a license, visit wvfuneralboard.wv.gov.

They investigate complaints. If you believe a funeral home violated WV law or the FTC Funeral Rule, the board has enforcement authority.

They set continuing education requirements. WV funeral directors must complete ongoing education to maintain their license — ensuring a minimum standard of knowledge and professionalism.

Recent relevant action: HB 4647 (2022). The board oversaw the implementation of WV's alkaline hydrolysis (water cremation) law, which took effect in 2022. This expanded consumer choice by legalizing a new cremation method.
